Weekend Specials

Greetings!

I know that water is vital to life, and the plants and trees and grass need it, but enough already. I feel like we’re in Seattle or the Olympic Peninsula or whatever rain forest you’re fond of, plus my basement is not totally happy. But the rain and heat and humidity do not deter what we are doing at Fratello’s, and we’re hoping that between raindrops you might mosey over this weekend for some good food & wine or other assorted beverages. We will be featuring Certified Angus Beef Delmonico Steak, Mahi-mahi from Hawaii and the ever so popular Jumbo Sea Scallops. I might add that we are into week three of our new menu, and the response has been very good regarding our new entrees. Remember, most of our menu will never change – you know, all the Fratello entrees, the Parms, the Veal Saltimbocca and Chicken Rollo, Linguini with Clams, etc. – so fear not. We’d love to see ya’!

Changes are afoot this weekend on our wine board, as the Locations AR is leaving the party. But joining is an interesting red blend from Washington State, which is mostly Syrah but with some Cabernet, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Mourvedre. Hailing from the Columbia Valley region in the eastern part of the state, this wine offers excellent fruit and medium body, and will work with our menu or simply on its own. I have also added some new wines to our wine list. These include a Schioppettino from the Friuli region of northeast Italy (Schioppettino is the grape – very good fruit, medium body, a delightful wine), Santagostino from Firriato, which is a Nero D’Avola/Syrah blend from Sicily, and an Estate Pinot Noir from one of my favorite Oregon wine producers, Maysara. Cyrus Pinot Noir offers slightly more body and structure than the Jamsheed Pinot, which is also on our list and also excellent. Maysara also has an excellent Pinot Gris which we also offer, and which at least one
reviewer suggests is the best Pinot Gris from Oregon that he has ever tasted. Lastly, I have added a rose from the Provence region of France, St. Roch les Vignes. This wine is a blend of Grenache and Cinsault, and exemplifies what rose from Provence is all about. Excellent by itself or with light entrees, wines like this are among my most favorite during the hot summer months. Yes, it is a pink wine, but give it a try, I think you may be a convert.

Rain or shine we are very appreciative of your support. Thank you sincerely, and we look forward to seeing you soon.

Ciao

P.S. I want add my thanks to the Cavs for a truly great season, if ultimately somewhat disappointing. They gave their all, especially you know who, and provided us with some great thrills and memories. Thank you, and I am optimistic about next season.

Weekend Specials

Greetings!

I know that technically speaking we are still in the spring season, but it sure feels like summer. I know, it is a little sticky for this time of year, and it has been a bit on the wet side, but it sure could be worse. It is nice to see people out enjoying themselves, golfing, gardening, walking, biking, going out to restaurants for some good food and wine, whatever. Just saying, but should you be free this weekend, we are featuring Berkshire Pork Chops, Mako Shark, and Wreck Grouper, so named because these are large grouper that like to explore ship wrecks off the Carolina coast. I know there is a lot to do this time of year, but we’d sure love to see ya’!

I mentioned recently that our supply of Shatter, the Grenache wine from France crafted by Dave Phinney and Joel Gott, was on short supply, but this has been remedied and we have good stock. Offering fruit and body, this wine tastes like California but is French, and works with our menu very well. I still love the Sangiovese blend from Ferrari-Carano, Siena, which is excellent either with our menu or simply by itself, but the Malbec blend from Argentina, AR, also by Dave Phinney is nearly gone. Fear not, however, for I have a nice blend from Washington waiting for its turn on the board. Last week I extolled the virtues of Rose wine, and the recent heat surge makes this wine taste even better, which I want to confirm has joined the party at Fratello’s. Give it a try.

We hope you are well and enjoying our good weather fortune. Thanks for all your support, and we hope to see you soon.

Ciao

P.S. HOW ABOUT THOSE CAVS!! Let’s hope they make it easier for all us fans tonight.

Weekend Specials

Greetings!

It looks like another beauty out there today. One could get used to this, non? Like good food & wine, which is also nice to get used to. Speaking of, this is what we have been endeavoring to do here at Fratello’s for the past 22+ years. Take this weekend, for instance, when we will be featuring Yellow Edge Grouper, Copper River Sockeye Salmon, and Certified Angus Beef Texas Strip Steak. The new menu which we rolled out last week has been well received, and while not drastically different (let’s be honest, there are many things on the menu which we cannot change – we do not want a riot on our hands!) there are several new items that we think you will enjoy. Give them a try.

As for the wine part of the good things in life, the collaboration between Dave Phinney and Joel Gott, Shatter, which we started last week continues on our wine board. A French wine that tastes like it was made in California, this Grenache works very well with our menu. The same goes for the other features, the Cab from Joel Gott, the Sangiovese blend from Ferrari-Carona, Siena, the Nebbiolo from Rivetti and the Locations AR from Orin Swift (i.e. Dave Phinney). In the near future I plan to introduce you to a red blend from Washington which offers fruit, body and balance, as well as a new Malbec from Argentina. I also am expecting a delivery of a Rose wine from the south of France, a blend of Grenache and Cinsault, that represents the wines from this region very well. I have struggled with Rose wines over the years, perhaps it has something to do with the pink color, but these wines are among my most favorite wines in warm weather. This is a DRY wine, decent fruit and body,
and is very tasty. Not a huge wine, but sometimes one does not need a big, blockbuster, just a decent wine to enjoy. Open your mind, give Rose a try and I bet you’ll find that “pink” wines are not bad.

Thanks as always for your continued support, we wouldn’t be here without ya’ (and we know it!). We hope you are well, and we look forward to seeing you soon.

Ciao

P.S. GO CAVS!!

Weekend Specials

Greetings!

Al I can say is that it sure is beautiful out. Beautiful sky, warm temps but not so humid, all good. Let’s hope it stays with us for more than one day, but knowing how things work around here, probably not. But whether Mother Nature blesses us with another gorgeous day, or not, we will be here this weekend for some good food & wine for you to enjoy. Our specials include Black Bass, Alaska Ivory King Salmon (among the very best fish for you, taste & healthwise!) and Certified Angus Beef Delmonico Steak. We are also into week two of our new menu, so come and check it out. As I mentioned last week most of our core menu remains, so fear not, and much of what we have served in the past we can continue to provide you, but the menu has some new dishes for you to enjoy. We hope to see ya’!

On the beverage side, I am adding tomorrow to our wine feature board a French wine made by two Americans whom you know and more importantly whose other wines you enjoy. The winemakers are Joel Gott and Dave Phinney, originally of Prisoner fame but also of many other wines that we have on our wine list, and their collaboration is a wine called Shatter, which is a Grenache wine. As you may recall I am very fond of Grenache wines, and they work very well with our menu. Shatter offers more fruit than most French wines, reflecting the winemakers preference and style, but is more restrained than big fruit bomb wines from California. The other new offering this weekend is a new draft beer from Jackie O’s from Athens, Ohio, called Razz Wheat, which we think works well with the warmer temps we are having. Try it and tell me what you think.

Thanks for your continued support. We hope you are in good health and frame of mind, and we look forward to seeing you soon.

Ciao

P.S. How about those CAVS!! Hooray!!!!!!!

Weekend Specials

Greetings!

Well, it has been another “topsy turvy” week, at least weather wise, although not strictly weather wise for me, if you know what I mean. But I digress, and besides it looks like we will end up on the “topsy” side of things as the week closes, which is a lot better than the “turvy” side. We have some nice specials for you to enjoy this weekend, including Atlantic Halibut, Jumbo Sea Scallops and the amazing Rib Eye Cap Steak, aka Spinelis, which you should try if you have not already. But the big news this weekend is that on Saturday we are launching a new menu, and a new lunch menu launches on the Tuesday after Memorial Day. Fear not, as much of the menu has not changed – I mean, we can not delete any of the Parmigiana, the Fratello dishes, the Eggplant, Linguini with Clams, Saltimbocca, Chicken Rollatini, etc. But there are several new Chicken entrees, a new Shrimp dish, and two new Veal entrees, including a new variation of Veal and Crab. And we are adding two new Flatbreads
to the Antipasto section. We hope you enjoy it.

On the wine side, the red blend from Portugal, Portada, is nearing its end on our feature board and I urge you to try it before it leaves us. A blend of five varietals native to the region, this medium bodied wine offers both fruit and a nice balance, very smooth. I am also very fond of the Nebbiolo Langhe from Rivetti from Piedmont, which offers an excellent introduction to this noble grape of Italy, the source of Barolo and Barbaresco. Not yet on our list but due soon is a Barbaresco Riserva, also by Rivetti, and the return of the Sangiovese based Vino Nobile di Montepulciano by La Casella, which beside being a hoot to say is a wonderful wine from Tuscany. Come in and enjoy some wine with us!

Thank you for your continued support, and we hope you are well. This Monday is Memorial Day, which by the way we will be closed for the entire day, and is a day when, in part, one remembers and respects how fortunate we all are in this country and especially those many men and women who have made all of this possible. We, for our part, are very grateful. Thank you, and we hope you enjoy your holiday. See you soon.

Ciao

Weekend Specials

Greetings!

It sure keeps one guessing around here. Last week I mentioned that we seemed to jump right into the summer temps, forget about spring, and this week it almost looked like fall again. A little consistency, please! Just like we try to do, week after week, providing you with some delicious dining options. Like this weekend, when we will be featuring Swordfish, Mahi-mahi and Certified Angus Beef Flat Iron Steaks. I know the nicer days and evening offer a lot of options for your time, but we’d love to see ya’!

On our wine feature board we continue to run with the new additions to join the Cab from Joel Gott and the Sangiovese red blend from Ferrari-Carano, Siena. Locations AR is another of the series of wines produced by Dave Phinney of Prisoner fame featuring grapes and regions of the world, this time being Argentina and featuring Malbec. This is one of the better Locations wines, and the blend works well with our menu. The Nebbiolo Langhe by Rivetti from Piedmont is one of the better Nebbiolos I have tasted recently, and also is very good with our menu. Nebbiolo is one of the major grapes of Italy, and is the source of the great Piedmont wines Barolo and Barbaresco. Barolo, referred to as the King of Italian wines, and Barbaresco are perhaps more structured and elegant than a Nebbiolo, but also much more expensive. This wine from Rivetti offers a good example of the heights that Nebbiolo can go to, and is a good introduction to the grape and what it is all about. I urge you to
try it.

Thanks for your continued support, and we hope you are well and enjoying the season, no matter what the temps are. We hope to see you soon.

Weekend Specials

Greetings!

Looks like we’re jumping right into summer, forget about spring. Now that I have said this, it will probably snow next week, but you get the idea. Not that we are complaining. Better days are coming for us all, and in fact I’d argue that they are here already. Take this weekend, for instance, when we will be featuring Prime Rib of Beef, Lane Snapper and Black Grouper. I know the nicer temps gives one the chance to keep up with the outdoor chores, and there are probably more options of things to do, but just remember that we are here for you. We’d love to see ya’!

The Locations AR continues to do well on our wine feature board, as do the always popular Cabernet from Joel Gott and the Sangiovese red blend from Ferrari-Carano, Siena. I am also fond of the red blend from Portugal, Portada, and I have added a Nebbiolo from Italy from Rivetti, an organic producer from Piedmont. Both the Portada and the Nebbiolo differ from the other more new world nuanced wines, offering less fruit and showing more of the effects of the soil and climate on the grapes. Not better, just different, and both are very good with our menu. Just a thought.

Thanks again for your continued support, in all kinds of weather and times. We are very grateful, and hope to see you soon. Take care of yourselves.

Weekend Specials

Greetings!

Looks like sunny days are coming soon, warmer temps, it might even be a taste, dare I say, of what’s to come (hopefully). Time to be in a celebratory frame of mind and treat yourselves to some good food & wine. We intend to “celebrate” this weekend by offering as features Dover Sole, Skate Wing Fish and Certified Angus Beef Delmonico Steaks. Come join us, we’d love to see ya’!

On the wine front, I have added Location AR to our program, another in the Location series of wines from around the world crafted by Dave Phinney, the creator of Abstract, Palermo, and Papillon, among others. AR is a red blend from Argentina, and is primarily Malbec with some Cabernet and Tannat, another Bordeaux varietal grape that does well in South America. It is interesting comparing AR to the other Malbec blend on our feature board from Cuvelier, which is also very good. I think AR is slightly more fruit forward and the Cuvelier blend slightly more complex, but that’s just me. Try it for yourself. Also, there also might be another Location wine lurking in the wings that we have featured before, just saying. As I have said before, I am confident that we have a wine for you to enjoy.

It finally seems like spring has come, and we hope you are well and enjoying the seasonal transition. Thanks for all your support, and we look forward to seeing you soon.

Weekend Specials

Greetings!

It really is unfortunate that I saw white flakes falling from the sky as I swept this morning. Well, I was thinking of something else rather than “unfortunate”, but you know what I mean. Enough already! How about some sun and warmth! Last I recall we are going on the final week of April.
Not too consistent temp wise around here, not that it ever is. But we for our part try to be, and this weekend we are featuring what we expect to be consistently good specials. Such as Lemon Sole from the North Atlantic, Swordfish and Certified Angus Beef Flat Iron Steaks. It might be chilly out but warm in Fratello’s, and we’d love to see ya’!

On our wine feature board I continue to run with the Cab from Joel Gott, the Sangiovese blend, Siena, from Ferrari-Carano, the Portada red blend from Portugal, and the Malbec blend from Argentina, Coleccion from Cuvelier. I like all these wines – the Portada is made with grapes indigenous to Portugal yet made in more of an international style, the Cabernet from Joel Gott is sourced from fruit from Napa and elsewhere in the state, Siena offers great fruit and acidity and is a wonderful food or by itself wine, and the wine by Cuvelier has it all – body, fruit and structure. Speaking of Joel Gott, I had the opportunity to meet and chat with him this week, and I’m glad to report that not only are his wines good but he is really a decent fellow. I should receive more of the wine La Massa this week, which is a blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet, Merlot and Alicante and is rated 92 points by Robert Parker. Medium to full bodied, this wine provides a taste of a so called “Super Tuscan” at
a more affordable cost. And lastly, for those in the know, there might be some “Locations” wine available this weekend as well, by the bottle at this point, and from more than one “Location”. Just sayin”

We hope you are well, and “unfortunately” I have to say warm, and we hope to see you soon. Thanks for all your support.

Weekend Specials

Greetings!

Well, it could be better out, non? I mean, like sunny a bit, perhaps a tad warmer as well. But we all know it sure could be worse, even could snow, heaven forbid, But there does not seem to be anything on the horizon to prevent one from heading out to enjoy good food and wine this weekend. For our part, we will be featuring Black Grouper, Jumbo Sea Scallops and Rack of Lamb this weekend. The weather and temps notwithstanding, the flowers are starting to come out, the Tribe is playing and won a game yesterday, and the Cavs are starting their playoff run this Sunday. There is an air of optimism in the air, and we are going to be optimistic and hope to see some of you this weekend.

Winewise, I plan some changes to our feature board tomorrow, adding a Malbec blend from Argentina and a red blend from the Lisboa region of Portugal. I am very fond of the wine from the Iberian peninsula (i.e. Spain & Portugal), not only for their quality but their value, and they work very well with our menu. We have wines from both countries on our list, and I urge you to try them. The other wine news is that we still have the lesser expensive Brunello that I mentioned last week, which I enjoyed with dinner last week (at Fratello’s, of course!), and I have a Pinot Blanc and a Riesling from the region of Alsace, France available. These wines are very crisp and fresh, and are somewhat drier than their counterparts from California or elsewhere in the world and are a good value. At this point they are available by the bottle only, but I think that you will enjoy them.

As I said above, there is an air of optimism in the air, which perhaps is typical with Spring and all the growth around us. Your support and friendship contributes to this optimism for us, and we are very grateful. I hope you are well, and we look forward to seeing you soon.

Ciao
