It is hard to believe that this weekend is the last before Christmas, non? As the song goes, where has all the time gone? But the calendar doesn’t lie, and I bet many of you are beyond busy getting ready for the big day and preparing to spend time with family and friends. For our part we are here and doing our thing, and would love to see you this weekend, if only so that we could wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. But if you are interested in dinner, which will be available as well, we will be featuring North Atlantic Haddock, Jumbo Sea Scallops and Baseball Top Sirloins. Oh, and there will probably also be some wine and spirits and beer and shrimp and veal and pasta and eggplant and chicken and clams and mussels and calamari and…..we’d love to see ya’!

On our wine board we continue to feature the Monastrell/Cabernet Sauvignon blend from Spain, Fuerza, which has been well received this past week since we added it to the board. I continue to feature the Cabernet from Joel Gott, the Zinfandel from Motto, and the Sangiovese blend from Ferrari-Carona, Siena. Several of these wines have been with us for awhile, like the Joel Gott and Siena, and I keep them because they offer quality and value for you. Plus they work well with our menu. Remember that our wine list offers wines from throughout the world, from California, Washington and Oregon to France, Spain, Australia, Portugal, Germany, Argentina and of course Italy. As I have said before, I am confident that we have a wine that will work for you.

Today, December 17th, marks an anniversary for us in that 23 years ago today we had our trial run in business, which worked out pretty well as we are still here 23 years later and counting. We could not have been here without your support, friendship and kindness and we are truly grateful. This time of year can be hectic and stressful, as I am sure you well know, but above all it is a time of joy and gratitude. We want to wish you a very peaceful and joyous Holiday Season and a very Merry Christmas.

Boy, it has been some December so far, non? It just does not seem that Christmas is only two weeks away, at least by looking outside and the weather and all. I’m all for it – keep the shovels in the garage where they belong. But temps notwithstanding, it is the Holiday Season, and we are prepped and ready to help you celebrate. Like this weekend, when we will be featuring Certified Angus Beef Strip Steaks, Barramundi Fish from New Zealand, and Corvina Fish from the Carolinas. I know this can be a busy and hectic time of year, but we hope you have time to pay us a visit. We’d love to see ya’!

I have added a new Spanish wine to our wine board from Fuerza which is a blend of Monastrell, known elsewhere as Mourvedre, and Cabernet Sauvignon. This is a nice drinking wine, with structure, fruit and even a bit of elegance. Highly rated by the wine press, including a 90 from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, this wine represents quality at a very good value. For those who are interested, we also received this week a long delayed shipment of Dornfelder, which to those of you who do not know is a slightly sweet red wine from Germany. The wine is served chilled, and while it is definitely sweet it is not cloyingly sweet, if you know what I mean. The distributor was shorted hundreds of cases on his order from Germany, but we were able to get some. So for now we are in stock, and should be for the near future. And yes, I have ordered more.

Fratello’s Wine Club News

I am pleased to announce the initial release of the Fratello’s Wine Club. Over the past several weeks I have tasted wines from a number of wine distributors, and have been offered lists and notes on a number of other wines, some of which I plan to include in further club selections. I have chosen three wines from very different wine regions, a wine from Spain, one from California, and a wine from Italy, which I thought was appropriate given that we are an Italian restaurant. I tasted the wines this past weekend with dinner with my family and they worked very well with our meal, which is a primary metric I use in selecting wines for you to enjoy. The wines continued to drink well the day after our meal with another dinner, and I hope you enjoy them. The wine will be available for pick up starting on Friday evening, December 11th, and thereafter any day that you are available to pick them up. The cost is just slightly more than my target range, totaling $123.97, which with tax
owed to the state gives a grand total of $132.03. In addition, the $40 one time cost of your wine bag will be added to your total which will be billed tomorrow, giving a final total of $172.03. The wine bag will be given you when you pick up your wines.

Now, the wines. The first wine is a 2012 Garnacha from Alto Moncayo from Spain, Veraton. This wine comes from the Campo de Borja region from Aragon, which is in north central Spain. The vineyard is in a very arid part of Spain in sight of the Pyrenees mountains to the north, and the vineyard has very stony soil with a very deep root system. Veraton is the third wine of Alto Moncayo, and comes from vines that 30 to 50 years old. Their other two wines comes from successively older vines, and I have tried their second wine which is excellent, and may be a candidate for a further club release. Garnacha along with Tempranillo are the two major grape varietals from Spain, and this wine has beautiful color, a pleasant mouth feel, and excellent fruit. The wine, which is aged 16 months prior to release, offers soft, not harsh, tannins and a full, lingering finish. It has also received very good reviews from the wine press, including a rating of 93 from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. I
am a big fan of this wine, and I hope you enjoy it.

The second wine is a Merlot from the Miner Family Winery from Napa Valley, California. In my view Merlot is a grape varietal which has been unfairly maligned in recent years and is worthy of both more respect and attention. This 2010 vintage is from the Stagecoach Vineyard, which is situated along an old stagecoach trail in volcanic soils on the eastern hills of the Oakville appellation of Napa. The wine is a blend of 91% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc, and offers moderate to full fruit in its nose, ripe cherry notes, fine tannins and a lengthy finish. This is a smooth tasting wine, fruit forward, and typical of fine Merlot from Napa. It just might make you a fan of Merlot again, or perhaps for the first time.

The third wine is a 2006 Barbaresco Riserva from Rivetti Massimo. Barbaresco is a 100% Nebbiolo grape varietal, and is grown around the village of Barbaresco in Piedmont in northwest Italy. Rivetti Massimo is located in the township of Neive, and this wine comes from their Serraboella vineyard, which is well suited for excellent Nebbiolo. I had lunch recently with Davide Rivetti, one of the younger generation of this family which has five generations of history in the wine business, and I was very impressed with the attention to detail the family makes in crafting their wines. They pay meticulous attention to every step in the process, especially with respect to the environment. They harvest by hand and use only organic fertilizers, very low amounts of sulfites, and strive to keep the wines as natural as possible. In fact this vineyard will be certified as organic in 2016. They use Slovenian oak barrels and then French “barrique” oak barrels, taking a page from the renowned
Barbaresco producer Angelo Gaja, and the wine offers balance, structure, body and finesse. Barbaresco offers perhaps a more nuanced and perhaps even a more “feminine” side to Nebbiolo, but what Barbaresco, and for that matter its bigger cousin, Barolo, offers to me is elegance. This is a well crafted wine that will be excellent with your meal. This is not a huge bodied Cabernet, rather it is rounded, a bit softer yet not a lightweight, and, again, elegance. Nebbiolo is a grape that should be on everybody’s radar, and now it may be on yours.

In closing, I want to thank you for your support for Fratello’s and your faith in joining the Wine Club. I want to finish with a quote attributed to Benjamin Franklin, who would be high on my list of historical dinner companions, who said “wine is sure proof that God loves us and wants to see us happy”. It kind of looks as if winter wants to pay us a visit today. I know it could be much worse – this is Northeast Ohio after all – but I was getting used to the more balmy type of November and now December weather. But there is a rumor that the temps might be heading upward again soon, like by this Sunday. To this I say HOORAY, but I guess we have to take our licks, so to speak, until then. To that end we are offering you a Black & Blue weekend coming up, starting tomorrow, when we will be featuring for dinner Black Grouper & Blue Marlin for you to enjoy, plus Piedmontese Boneless Beef Short Ribs. Whatever happens outside, good or bad or in between, we will be here for you, and we’d love to see ya’!

On our wine board our supply of the Bordeaux red from Chateau Le Bourdieu is running low, but fear not as I have other wines just waiting to join the board. These include wines from Argentina and several from Spain, which as I have told you often are very good values in addition to being very good. I have also tasted and plan to add to our wine list an Italian red blend from Tuscany, actually from the Bolgheri region. This wine is a so called Super Tuscan from Tenuta Argentiera, Poggio ai Ginepri, and is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot and Petit Verdot. This part of Tuscany is known for their red blends of Bordeaux varietal grapes, and some of the finest wines from Tuscany hail from this region. Many of these wines tend to be on the expensive side, but this offering is much more of a value in addition to being very good. It may not make it to our list by this weekend, but I urge you to try it. Just ask us. Remember, we have a bit of juice on hand here, and I bet
we can match you up with a wine that works for you.

Our plans for New Year’s Eve continue to develop, and at this point our seating for both 5:30 and 7:30 are on a wait list. The last seating at 9:30 still has availability. Remember that I personally confirm every reservation, and it is not uncommon to have cancellations prior to and even on New Year’s Eve. Thanks to all of you who have signed up already, and to those of you who may be interested I will do my best to get you in. Just call, do not email.

It is now officially (for me anyways) the Christmas & Holiday Season, and as with the Thanksgiving Holiday just concluded, it compels me to take stock of and thanks for all my blessings. Whew, as Yoda might say, pretty stuffed I am. I bet the same is true for many of you as well. We are all very fortunate, certainly some more than others, but I bet we all have much to be thankful for this Thanksgiving evening. But, alas, tomorrow is another day (as Scarlett might say), and as with every day will present a whole new set of challenges for us. Like, for instance, what to do for dinner. Many of us have spent too much time in our own kitchens today, so why not let us do the cooking for you this weekend. We will be featuring Certified Angus Beef Delmonico Steak, Lemon Sole and Mahi-mahi, fresh from Hawaii. I know it might be a stretch to consider another meal at this point, but one has to eat, and we sure would love to see ya’. Take a break from “Black Friday”, and join us for “Tasty Friday” at Fratello’s. Who knows, maybe we can start a new tradition!

Nuts, it looks like our run of good luck, at least weather wise, is about to end. I hope I’m wrong, but it looks like we’re about to have a change our way. I even heard the dreaded “S” word mentioned. But you know cooler temps are actually good for something, well, actually many things. But what I’m thinking about now is how good well prepared food & wine go with cooler weather. Like, say, at Fratello’s, when this weekend we will be preparing Pork Tenderloin, Haddock and Arctic Char for your dining pleasure, in addition to some Veal & Shrimp & Clams & Mussels & Calamari & Eggplant & Chicken & Pasta & Artichokes &…. It might be cooler but not too extreme out, and we’d love to see ya’!

The Bordeaux red wine from Chateau Le Bourdieu went very well on our feature board, such that I bought another case for you to enjoy. This wine is a 50/50 blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, the two major grapes of Bordeaux, and provide an introduction to among the most famous and renowned wine regions of the world. The Black Blend Red Zinfandel blend is nearly gone, but it will be followed by a Zinfandel made with grapes sourced from across California, Motto. Although a California wine, it is actually made in Washington, and there is a link to the winemaker at Chateau St. Michel. Fruit forward, dark and bold, this is a nice wine to enjoy anytime, but especially when a bit on the cool side. I tasted this wine when exploring options for the Fratello’s Wine Club, and I am planning for the first release in early December. Thanks to all of you who have joined, and although I expect the club to always welcome new members, only those who join prior to Thanksgiving will receive
the December release. Ask for details, I think it will be both fun and interesting, tasty too.

And it is especially poignant in light of recent events in Paris, actually throughout the world, which as an ardent Francophile has been very difficult for me. Certainly my family comes to mind, as do my staff, many of whom have been with us for a very long time, as many of you well know. And I am very grateful for you, our loyal patrons, who have supported us for over 22 years through both peaks and valleys. We all are very grateful, thank you, and we look forward to seeing you soon.

Well, I guess it was too good to last. The Fall has been amazing thus far, warm & clear days, decent sleeping weather, just like we wish for every year but seldom get. Today, not so much, just a raw kind of day. Now we all know it sure could be worse – let’s hope not, at least not quite yet – but you know this kind of day is good for something. What, you might ask, and I would reply that these type of days are just about perfect to enjoy a nice, cozy meal and a tasty glass, or bottle, of wine. Like, for instance (surprise, surprise!) at Fratello’s, when this weekend we will be featuring Boneless Beef Short Ribs, #1 Yellowfin Tuna, and fresh Halibut for your dining pleasure. We cannot do much about what is happening outside, but inside Fratello’s I think we can offer you a good time. We’d love to see ya’!

On our wine board as I mentioned last week I have added the Cabernet/Merlot blend from Bordeaux by Chateau Le Bourdieu, available by the bottle or by the glass. This wine is a 50/50 blend, so one could just as well say it is a Merlot/Cabernet blend, and it offers a taste of Bordeaux at a very reasonable price point. This wine joins the Cab from Joel Gott, the Sangiovese based blend, Siena, from Ferrari-Carano, and the Zinfandel blend from Lodi from Rare Breed, Black Blend. And if these don’t tempt you I am confident we have something on our list you would enjoy. Remember, one can always take your wine home if you do not finish it at the restaurant.

The newly established Fratello’s Wine Club is alive and well and open for membership, which a number of you, our loyal patrons, have joined already. To recap the details, I will choose three bottles of wine three or four times a year that you will pick up at the restaurant. The wines will be mostly red but there will be whites and roses as well, depending on what I taste, and they will not be limited by geography, country or varietal. I can give you more details at the restaurant, and one can join any time, but one must join by Thanksgiving to receive the first release, planned for early December. I think it will be a lot of fun, and interesting as well as we proceed. Thanks to all of you who have joined already!

Hasn’t the weather been just wonderful recently? The kind of days that you want to bottle up and save for a few months down the road. Ahhh, wishful thinking, non? But things change, as we all know, and rumor has it that more seasonable temps are in our near future (i.e. tomorrow). But do not despair, such days are perfect to head out for some fine food & wine. For our part we will be featuring Certified Angus Beef Flat Iron Steak, Wild Black Grouper from the South Atlantic, and Monchong Fish from the waters off Hawaii. Consider joining us, we’d love to see ya’!

These days leading up to Thanksgiving (which seems this year to be coming on pretty fast, at least to me) are a little slow in the wine trade, and for our part we continue to feature on our wine board the Cabernet from Joel Gott, the Sangiovese blend from Sonoma from Ferrari-Carano, the Black Blend which is a Zinfandel blend from Lodi, and the Malbec blend from Cuvelier from Argentina. I do plan to bring out soon a wine from Bordeaux, which is priced to give one an idea what Bordeaux, among the most storied of wine regions anywhere, is all about. I have been tasting wines recently, and among the tastings was one with wines from Penfolds from Australia. The Shiraz Bin 28 is both very good and a very good value, perhaps the least expensive Penfolds wine available, and we offer it on our wine list. I urge you to try it.

I want to share with you is that I have launched the Fratello’s Wine Club, and I am planning a target date for the initial release in early December. If you are interested I can discuss the details with you in the restaurant, but I am planning for releases three or four times a year, with each release being three bottles of wine. Although I expect most of the wines to be red, I also plan to include white and rose wines as well, and perhaps even sparkling. I think it will be a lot of fun and interesting, as it is when one drinks new wines (at least for me). Contact me at the restaurant for details if you are interested, but please not by email. I know that Halloween is fast upon us, but do you know what is truly scary about this weekend? No, not our beloved Browns, but that next week is November already! And I hear that the man with the white whiskers up north is getting things ready for the big day in December, which is less than two months away! As the song says, where has all the time gone? But what is definitely not scary is that this weekend we have some nice specials to tempt your palate at Fratello’s. We will be featuring Certified Angus Beef New York Strip Steak, Swordfish and Lemon Sole for your dining pleasure. Remember that on Halloween there is still plenty of time after the trick or treaters are gone to come join us for some fine food and wine. We’d love to see ya’!

It’s been kind of a roller-coaster recently, non? Sure, we have had some chilly nights recently, and after all it is October, but we have had some beautiful days as well. And it is not too bad out there right now. Just the weather I like – nice days, cool nights, just perfect for you know what. I know this could go many places, but I was thinking of heading out for some fine food & wine (you were too, non?). Like, say at Fratello’s, when this weekend we will be featuring Certified Angus Beef Delmonico Steak, Halibut from the North Atlantic, and Arctic Char, also from the North Atlantic. Hope you can join us.

On our wine board I have added a wine from Argentina from Cuvelier Los Andes, Coleccion, which is a red blend of Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Petit Verdot. This Bordeaux style blend offers fruit and body, structure and style. I am very fond of this winery, and I have recently mentioned another of their wines which we have on our wine list, Grand Vin. Grand Vin is perhaps the finest wine I have tasted all summer, and the Coleccion is essentially a baby brother to the Grand Vin. I expect to add a Zinfandel from Lodi to the feature board this weekend, and waiting in the wings are wines from Bordeaux, France, and another wine from Argentina, this time a Cabernet blend with no Malbec. As I have said before, there is a lot of juice out there to enjoy, and we have a bunch on hand for you. Come have a glass, or bottle, with us.

And although I hate to jump the gun on seasons, preferring to enjoy where I am at, all things being equal the reality of winter is not too far off.
