I know it is snowing out as I write this, and Mon Dieu, it is even sticking!! But fear not, better days are coming. Not only are the days definitely getting longer, but I heard a rumor that next week we are expecting temps in the 60’s and some say may even approach 70 (I know, I don’t believe it either). I do know that our friend Daylight Savings is about to come back, and did I say that the days are getting longer? Time to be optimistic, I say (always better to be half full anyway), and treat yourselves to some fine food & wine this weekend. For our part, we will be featuring Certified Angus Beef Flat Iron Steaks, Haddock from the North Atlantic, and Gold Tile Fish from off the coast of Florida. We’d love to see ya’!

Our wine board is in a bit of transition, and by this weekend we will be featuring the Napa Cabernet from Joel Gott, the Sangiovese blend from Sonoma by Ferrari-Carano, and the Tempranillo, Tamaral, from Spain. I have mentioned Spanish wines in the past, and I am a big fan of these wines because they offer both quality and value and they work very well with our menu. This wine from Tamaral is a Tempranillo, the major red grape along with Garnacha in Spain, is medium to full bodied with both abundant fruit, body and structure. I also received more of the Brunello from Molino del Piano from Italy. Brunello along with Barolos, some Barbarescos and Amarone, are among the best and most expensive wines from Italy. This Brunello, however, is a value, Brunello wise, yet also earned 91 points when rated by the Wine Advocate. I usually feel with these wines that if they are under priced there usually is a reason, quality wise. This wine, while not inexpensive at $50/bottle but less
than the more typical $80 plus for a Brunello, does proved a glimpse into what Brunello, which is 100% Sangiovese, is all about. Just a thought.

It’s funny sometimes how things work out. Not “ha-ha” funny perhaps but “funny” nonetheless. Last week it was all sunny and looking up, this week not so much. But on the bright side the days are definitely longer, and the snow aside we are on the back nine winter wise. And it does not look like it will be too difficult to head out for some fine food & wine this weekend, like, say, at Fratello’s. We will be featuring Certified Angus Beef Strip Steak, Red Grouper from the South Atlantic, and Cape D’Or Salmon from Canada. Give it a thought, we’d love to see ya’!

On the wine front we are featuring a Pinot Noir from the Russian River Valley by White Oak Vineyards, which is based in Sonoma. This wine offers upfront fruit, balance and a more forward body typical of Pinot from California, and it is priced at $39/bottle. The original price was $50. We also have a Brunello del Montalcino from Molino del Piano. This 2009 vintage is 100% Sangiovese and has been rated 91 by the Wine Advocate. Brunello is one of the premier wines from Italy, and it works very well with our menu. Most Brunellos are more expensive, typically $80 or more in a restaurant setting. This Brunello is $50. Lastly, we are still featuring the fruit forward Conundrum Red and the Tempranillo from Tamaral on our wine board. Conundrum is a dry wine but almost seems sweet because of all the forward fruit, and the Tempranillo as with most wines from Spain is a very good match with our menu. These wines are available by the bottle and by the glass. Give them a try.

It sure was nice to see the sun today, non? And it looks like the news, at least weather wise, is looking up for the next few days. Sunny and warmer, a nice primer for what is coming our way in just a few short months (hopefully). Nothing to hold you back from venturing out for some good food & wine. Like, for instance, at Fratello’s, when this very weekend we will be featuring Prestige Pork Chops, Monk Fish and Chilean Sea Bass. The weather shouldn’t hold you back, and we’d love to see ya’!

A few changes are afoot on our wine board. I still have the Cabernet from Joel Gott and the Sangiovese blend from Ferrari-Carano, which have been staples for us for many months now, and joining them is the red blend Conundrum, a Cab from the Lake District north of Napa by Shannon Ridge, and a new wine from Spain, Tamaral. The blend in Conundrum is not indicated by the winemaker, but to me it has to include Petit Sirah and Zinfandel, along with some other varietals, and is not that much different from the other red blend we featured recently, The Riddler. I do think that Conundrum has a bit more depth than The Riddler has however. The Cab from Shannon Ridge offers a different take on Cabernet than the Joel Gott offers, perhaps more in the style of a Bordeaux wine from France with the fruit a bit more muted. Tamaral is a Ribera del Duero from Spain, the grape is Tempranillo, and this wine like many others from Spain work very well with our menu. I have mentioned before how well
Spanish wines work with our menu and that they typically offer a good value, and this wine is indicative of this. Lastly, we have more of the Brunello from Molino del Piano that I mentioned last week. This wine is rated 91 by the respected wine critic Robert Parker, and offers a pleasant nose, decent body and structure and ends with a nice finish. Not only an excellent wine with dinner, as I enjoyed this evening, but a value as well, especially for a Brunello, which all tend to have higher price points. My usual take is a Brunello at this price should be avoided, but not this one. Last week I had 6 bottles for the weekend, and we did not make it through Saturday. So we have more now. Give it a try.

Wouldn’t you know it, we get the coldest temps of the season on Valentines’s weekend! Do not be troubled, however, for it is warm in Fratello’s (I paid the bill) and we are here for you and your Valentine, or whomever you come with (we’re easy). However, be warned that on the actual Valentine’s Day this Sunday we will all be somewhere else with our Valentines. But this weekend we will be featuring Red Grouper, the ever popular Jumbo Sea Scallops and Certified Angus Beef Bone-in Rib Eye Steaks. And Veal and Shrimp and Pasta and Clams and Mussels and Eggplant and Chicken and….I am sure we have something to delight your palate.

On our wine board our supply of the very fruit forward Riddler is getting limited, but I expect delivery tomorrow of two new wines to join the Joel Gott Cabernet and Siena from Ferrari-Carano on the board. One is the new vintage of the red blend Connundrum and another is a Cabernet Sauvignon but not from Napa. This wine is from the Lake District north of Napa, and when tasting it I thought it offered a nice contrast from the Napa Cab from Joel Gott. Not better, just different, they are both good and the Joel Gott is not going anywhere as long as they have it. I also have a Brunello from 2009 that is not on our list but I was able to get it at a price point that puts it at $50 on our list, which is inexpensive for a Brunello. This wine from Molino del Piano is rated 91 by Robert Parker of the Wine Advocate, and just might be the wine to make your Valentine swoon. Just saying. I have said before, I am sure that we have a wine here for you, just ask.

I know it is February and all, but those 50+ degree temps we had recently were pretty nice, non? One could get used to that, as I did, but unfortunately reality often finds a way to set in, as the recent chill seems to have done. But no need to despair, because one can still enjoy quality food & wine (thank God!!). For our contribution to this enjoyment, we will be featuring this weekend Certified Angus Beef Texas Sirloin, Flounder and Red Drum, the latter two being fresh fish from the Mid-Atlantic off the coast of the Carolinas. We hope you consider joining us this weekend for a nice dinner, or perhaps a nice beverage, or both – we’d love to see you!!

Our wine board continues to feature the Cab from Joel Gott, the Sangiovese blend from Ferrari-Carano, Sienna, and the Washington Cab blend Revelry and the Red Blend from California, The Riddler. The latter is a dry wine but with abundant fruit, so it is not as dry as many other wines out there, and the response so far has been very positive. Good with food or not, give it a try. If the fruit is too much for you, I would go with The Revelry, which is another red blend but with more subdued fruit. This is what I love about wine, among other things, is that there is a wine out there for everyone. Join us and I am confident we can match you up with a winner.

Hey, it looks like a good weekend coming up! Should be decent outside, maybe some sun, maybe some rain – who knows – but as I have said before, we all know it could be worse for us. If it were me, just saying, I think I might be inclined to head out for some good food & wine. And if I were to come to Fratello’s, again just saying, this weekend I would have some tasty specials to choose from for my main course. Like Cape D’Or Salmon, which is sustainable salmon for those who care, Boneless Buffalo Short Ribs, and King Crab Legs. Or maybe some Veal or Shrimp or Eggplant or Calamari or Calms & Mussels or Pasta or Chicken or….lots of choices. Hope you can join us, we’ll be here for you!

Some wine news to share with you. I continue to feature the Cab blend from Washington from Revelry, which I am very fond of, and the excellent Tempranillo from Numanthia from Spain, Termes, which unfortunately is nearly gone. I have also added a red blend from Napa that a friend recommended called The Riddler. This non-vintage red blend does not indicate what the blend is, suggesting that we figure it out. I would bet there is Petite Sirah, Zinfandel and Cabernet in the mix, but who knows. Regardless the wine offers plenty of fruit in a medium body, decent balance and finish, and is a good value. Come try it and guess what you think it is made of, I think you will like it. A very friendly wine.

On our wine list I have added a Barbera D’Alba from Tenuta Carretta, which we enjoyed at our last wine dinner last fall. This wine is very well made, as are all their wines, with a softness and elegance sometimes lacking in other Barberas. I have also added a new vintage of an excellent Barbaresco from Ovello, and a Cabernet blend from one of my favorite wineries in Washington, L’Ecole No. 41, called Apogee. This wine is a blend of Cabernet, Merlot, Cab Franc and Malbec and has everything going for it. Body, structure, balance, flavor and finish, a very fine wine. Lastly, as a favor to a wine distributor I have a Pinot Noir from Russian River Valley that we are offering at a reduced rate for you to enjoy. This Pinot is from White Oak, a vineyard I am also very fond of and have had the opportunity to visit and meet with the winemaker and owner. This wine is very true to the varietal, elegant and intense, and comes from the 2012 vintage that the Wine Enthusiast rated a 95.We
are offering it at $39 per bottle, less than the $50 normal cost and a very good value for a Russian River wine. Give it a try.

It’s funny (maybe not the best word), a few weeks back we were basking in the warmth of 40 and even 50+ temps in December, yet today and recently we have had to deal with a bit of a freeze, to say the least. Sure it could be worse, and there is a rumor of a heat wave soon above the freezing mark, but I was getting used to those 40+ degree days. Alas, such is life, and no mater the outside temps we at Fratello’s try to persevere and offer you excellent food & wine. Like this weekend, for instance, when we will be featuring Pork Osso Bucco (which we have served in the past and is amazing), Halibut from Norway and Wild Hokkaido Scallops. These scallops come from the northernmost and largest island in Japan, and are typically large and noted for their tenderness and sweet, creamy taste. We hope you have a chance to join us.

On our wine board I continue to feature the Cabernet blend from the Washington vineyard Revelry, The Reveler. Offering body, structure and fruit, yet more restrained than a Napa style Cab, this wine is very good with our menu or by itself. I am also adding a wine from Spain that is one of my favorite wines, Termes from Numanthia. Numanthia is a very respected vineyard from the Duero valley in northwest Spain, and this wine is their first level offering. It is a Tinto de Toro, the local name for Tempranillo, which along with Garnacha are the major red grapes of Spain. Termes has subtle tannins, body and richness with a long finish. I only have a few bottles, yet I suspect more will be in the pipeline soon. Give it a try, an amazing wine.

A little reflection, if I may. Recently we all learned of the passing of David Bowie and now Glenn Frey, two music legends that many if not most of us grew up with. And sadly some of you may have felt the loss of a loved one or friend recently, as I did with the passing of my rascal friend Michael. When events such as these occur one often takes stock of one’s life and what is truly important and what truly has the most meaning. We at Fratello’s are indeed grateful that we have been here in Avon Lake for more than 23 years attempting to offer you quality food & wine. We are also grateful for your continued support and friendship, and for my part I am grateful for my long time staff who have helped us craft and execute our vision for you. Crazy times we live in, non? Now I know this can apply to many things these days, especially this year (if you know what I mean), but I’m thinking of going from wicked cold to nearly 40 degrees in a day or so, and then, they say, returning to the teens again on Monday. A little consistency would be nice. Like, for instance, what we try to do here at Fratello’s with our food & wine & service &…, well, with everything. Take this weekend, when we will be offering as specials Mahi-mahi from Hawaii, Swordfish and Certified Angus Beef Flat Iron Steak. We hope you have a chance to join us, we’d love to see ya’!

A few wine thoughts to share with you. On our wine board we have a few bottles left of the Cabernet blend from Argentina, Finca Libertad, which is on the bigger body side and perhaps more in the style of an old world wine rather than a fruit bomb from the new world. The Cabernet blend from Washington from Revelry, The Reveler, has officially joined the board, and this red blend does show more fruit that does the Argentine wine yet also offers body, structure and substance. I have mentioned this vineyard before, and I am very impressed with their efforts. Revelry also makes an excellent Syrah which we have on our wine list, and it is among the best Syrahs I have ever tasted. I have also added a few bottles of a Grenache by Revelry, which has attracted excellent reviews. Both of these wines are “*” wines, but worth the cost. Lastly, I also want to mention the Pinot Noir from Maysara which we have on our list. Now I know that some of you are perhaps not that keen on Pinot Noir,
but I urge you to enlarge your tent and try it. This wine from Oregon is excellent, and Maysara was considered the best Pinot in a tasting the New York Times had recently of Oregon Pinot Noirs. I have visited this vineyard and was very impressed with their efforts and the way they run their business, professionally and the way they treat the environment and their employees. We have two Pinot Noir wines from Maysara on our list, and a Pinot Gris as well. Try them, I think you will be impressed.

Welcome to 2016! I know I have said as such to many of my readers, but not to all, and as this is my first email of the new year I thought a welcome was appropriate. I trust you made it through the rush of the Holidays and the New Year’s festivities relatively intact, as have we (emphasis, though, on “relatively”), and for me there is no better way to start the new year than with treating yourselves to some good food & wine. Like, say, at Fratello’s, when this weekend we will be featuring Pilot Rack of Lamb, Silk Snapper from Florida and Black Bass. We hope you have a chance to mosey over, we’d love to see ya’!

I have added a Cabernet blend from Argentine to our wine feature board, Finca Libertad, which addresses the question whether there are red wines other than Malbec from Argentina. Medium to full bodied with abundant fruit, this wine has both balance and substance and will stand up well to food, such as our veal or chicken or the Pilot Rack of Lamb. I also plan by way of contrast to add to the board a Cabernet blend from Washington state called The Reveler. We have featured this wine before, and I am a big fan of this Washington vineyard. We have on our wine list a very full bodied and excellent Syrah from this vineyard, which is among my favorite wines I tasted last year. The Reveler is more value orientated and offers excellent fruit typical of the region, but not at the sacrifice of balance and body. Both of these wines are very good and I think you will enjoy them.

I do not know if you have noticed, but the days are getting longer now, as the song goes, and we all know this winter has not been too rough thus far (hopefully not the kiss of death, if you know what I mean). Let us all be optimistic as we start the New Year, just remember that we are here for you. Thanks for all your support, and thanks to those of you who helped us kick in the year on New Year’s Eve. The New Year is fast approaching, and as I write this we are prepping and trying to get prepared for the big night. Which is kind of a big night in our business. FYI we will be closed on New Year’s Day, but will be here for business as usual on Saturday, January 2nd. We will be offering specials that evening, but they depend on what happens tonight, and what if anything we can have delivered on Saturday. Of course, our regular menu will be available, as well as some wine and beer and spirits and…I know the next two evenings can be rather festive, but would love to see you this weekend as we welcome in the New Year.

I want to thank you for your continued support and friendship you have extended to us all these many years. As you know we recently concluded our 23rd year in operation, and it was way back in 1992 that my brother and I decided to make a go of a small Italian restaurant in Avon Lake. In that span there have been good years, and not so good years, but with your support and the help of our wonderful staff we have made it thus far, with plans to carry on for many more. It is very much appreciated. On behalf of the entire Fratello’s family, present and past, I want to wish you a most Happy and Safe New Year, and we look forward to seeing you soon.
